Best Restaurants in Munich for Every Meal

Munich gives you more than one way to eat Bavarian food. Choose Münchner Suppenküche for a quick market lunch, Bergwolf for a currywurst later on, or Restaurant Tantris for a long tasting menu. Between those extremes, taverns offer a proper seated meal, while Sparkling Bistro makes dinner the main event. The choice is less about a universal “best” restaurant than whether you want a particular dish, a beer-hall setting or time to linger over several courses.

For a main dish under about €15, start with soup or currywurst. Those are quick, modest portions rather than the prolonged meal you get at a tavern. The ranges above are planning estimates, not menu quotes. A beer-hall visit buys a landmark setting as well as dinner, while a tasting menu is a different commitment in time and cost.

At the market and currywurst counter, you can make a spontaneous stop. For a tavern meal, allow for shared seating at the big hall and arrange a table if you need your group together. Reserve an occasion dinner ahead rather than relying on a walk-in.

Where to eat around Munich

Viktualienmarkt puts a quick bowl and a seated Bavarian meal within the same market area: Münchner Suppenküche suits a short lunch, while Der Pschorr is where you sit down for beef and beer. If you are exploring Munich’s first-visit attractions in the Old Town, a market lunch is easy to pair with the central sights.

In the Old Town, Hofbräuhaus am Platzl is the landmark beer-hall choice, while Schneider Bräuhaus im Tal is the stop for a named traditional beef dish and wheat beer. Choose the first for its history and communal tables, the second if the order itself matters more than the landmark.

For an inexpensive evening bite, head towards Gärtnerplatz and Bergwolf. Wirtshaus in der Au gives you a neighbourhood tavern meal in Haidhausen. For a dinner built around the cooking rather than a beer-hall room, look to Sparkling Bistro in Maxvorstadt or Restaurant Tantris in Schwabing.

Münchner Suppenküche, Viktualienmarkt

Münchner Suppenküche at Viktualienmarkt is for a bowl between market stops, not a long restaurant dinner. Its selection changes daily. Look for Altbayerische Kartoffelsuppe, old Bavarian potato soup, among the named soups. The potato bowl makes a more substantial lunch than a snack, without committing you to a tavern-sized main course.

The market outlet gives you somewhere to eat while you are already among the food stalls. Its daytime service makes it a lunch choice rather than an evening fallback. If the potato soup is not among that day’s changing selection, pick another of the soups rather than building your visit around one fixed order.

Der Pschorr, Viktualienmarkt

Der Pschorr turns a stop beside Viktualienmarkt into a seated Bavarian meal. Order the hearty beef roulade made with Murnau-Werdenfels cattle, a more particular reason to choose the place than its convenient market location alone. The restaurant also serves Hacker-Pschorr beer, so you can make this the main meal of a market visit rather than eating on the move.

It opens earlier on Saturdays and public holidays than on ordinary weekdays. If you want a full lunch near the market, take a table here instead of eating as you walk between stalls. The beer gives you another reason to stay for the meal.

Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, Old Town

Hofbräuhaus am Platzl is Munich’s famous beer-hall restaurant, a place to choose for the historic room as much as the food. It began as the Bavarian court brewery’s own beer hall in 1589. The brewery later moved out of the centre, but the hall remains on Platzl. Expect communal tables where different parties may sit together, rather than the privacy of a small dinner table.

Order Schweinshaxe, roast pork knuckle, served with dark beer gravy and a potato dumpling. That substantial plate fits the shared-table beer-hall occasion. If you want a quiet, food-led dinner, choose a different setting. After dinner, Munich nightlife areas can help you decide where to continue the evening without making the beer hall your only stop.

Schneider Bräuhaus im Tal, Old Town

Schneider Bräuhaus im Tal is the Old Town tavern for Kronfleisch, a traditional Bavarian beef dish. Order it with Schneider Weisse wheat beer if you want a meal defined by the house’s particular food and drink, rather than simply a familiar beer-hall main. Its Tal address also makes it an easy seated pause while you are in the centre.

There is a different reason to come in the morning: a white-sausage breakfast. If that is your aim, how to eat a Munich Weißwurst breakfast explains the tradition and what goes with it. The tavern opens for breakfast as well as later meals, giving you a morning alternative to a beef dinner.

Bergwolf, near Gärtnerplatz

Bergwolf on Fraunhoferstraße is a currywurst counter for a quick bite near Gärtnerplatz. The sausage with curry-spiced sauce gives you a specific order when you want something more filling than a snack but do not want to devote the evening to a seated dinner. Counter service makes this a flexible stop on your way through the area.

The Fraunhoferstraße address puts this stop near Gärtnerplatz rather than among the Old Town beer halls. Evening service varies across the week. It works best when you want to eat currywurst at the counter and then carry on, not spend the evening over several courses.

Wirtshaus in der Au, Haidhausen

Wirtshaus in der Au is a Haidhausen tavern for oven-fresh roast pork with crackling. It is a proper seated main course, distinct from pork knuckle: ask for the roast if that is the dish you came to eat. You can also look for Dampfnudeln, sweet steamed dumplings, without making dessert the reason for choosing your main meal.

The weekday pattern is geared to dinner, but on weekends and public holidays the tavern opens in the morning too. That difference matters if you are planning lunch across the Isar rather than an evening in Haidhausen.

Sparkling Bistro, Maxvorstadt

Sparkling Bistro in Maxvorstadt is for an occasion dinner built around Austrian roots and French technique. It has one Michelin star in the 2026 selection. Look for its signature sourdough Buchteln, soft baked dumplings served with fennel pollen: a dish that tells you more about the kitchen than a generic promise of fine dining. This is the choice when the cooking, rather than a historic beer-hall room, is the point of the evening.

Dinner is offered Wednesday to Saturday, with lunch on Friday and Saturday. Secure a table for the occasion rather than turning up as you would at a market counter. Lunch gives you another way to try this kitchen if an evening meal does not suit your plans.

Tantris, Schwabing

Restaurant Tantris in Schwabing is a destination for a rotating tasting menu, not a place to select one fixed main dish. Founded in 1971, it holds two Michelin stars in the 2026 guide. The menu offers five courses at lunch and seven in the evening, with a vegetarian option. Set aside a long meal rather than treating it as a pause between other stops.

A sample lunch menu names Petit Bateau, red mullet with vadouvan and fennel, but it illustrates the cooking, not a guaranteed course on the day you eat. If you prefer to choose individual dishes, book Tantris DNA instead: it is the separately reservable à-la-carte restaurant, not another name for Restaurant Tantris’s tasting menu. Restaurant Tantris serves lunch and dinner Wednesday to Saturday and also opens on public holidays. This is the meal to arrange deliberately rather than leave to chance.
