eSIM in Berlin: Plans and Phone Setup

Use your home line if it already includes Germany roaming. Otherwise, a travel eSIM suits an unlocked, compatible phone when you mainly need data. German prepaid service is the alternative if you want a local number. For Berlin, Airalo, Holafly and Vodafone Travel offer different short-stay packages, so compare speed and hotspot conditions as well as price.

You can keep your home number available on a suitable dual-SIM handset while the travel line supplies data. Before buying, establish that your exact phone variant supports eSIM and permits another carrier’s service.

EU/EEA subscriptions permitting EU-wide roaming qualify in Germany during periodic travel. The area includes EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. Eligible roaming applies domestic rates to calls made and received, SMS sent and received, and data. Premium services and ship or aircraft satellite networks may cost extra.

A limited domestic data allowance can generally be used abroad, but unlimited or very cheap plans may have a separate roaming fair-use cap. For open bundles, the minimum cap is twice the monthly price excluding VAT divided by the regulated wholesale data rate. Subscriptions from outside the regulated area depend on their own terms.

Choose German prepaid for a local number, or keep your existing line if its included roaming meets your needs.

Phone compatibility and your home number

A US phone can use a Berlin travel eSIM if its exact variant supports eSIM and it is unlocked. Purchase country alone does not settle either question. The main disadvantage is incompatibility: an unlocked phone accepting a physical SIM can use that instead, while a locked handset can use its home carrier’s roaming.

Do

  • Match the model number and sales region to the manufacturer’s specifications; confirm provider support.
  • Establish carrier-lock status before buying another carrier’s service.
  • Keep the home subscription active and its line enabled.

Don’t

  • Assume every version of a phone family supports eSIM.
  • Assume an eSIM bypasses a carrier lock.
  • Treat keeping a number as a guarantee of incoming service.

On iPhone, use Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock (or Network Provider Lock): “No SIM restrictions” means unlocked. Your carrier can confirm lock status, including on Android.

On a dual-SIM handset supporting both lines active, select the travel line for data and retain the home line for calls and SMS. Incoming service still depends on your home carrier’s roaming and network support. Non-inclusive home plans can charge for roaming data.

Airalo Germany, Holafly Berlin and Vodafone Travel Germany all cover Berlin. Airalo counts its speed-reset periods from activation, rather than midnight, so unlimited total data does not mean uninterrupted full-speed data.

For a short visit centred on maps, messaging and browsing, choose according to the package term and how much data you expect to use. Vodafone Travel’s example offers a finite allowance over a longer stay, but its extra data and reduced price are offer conditions, not a permanent tariff assumption.

Choose Airalo for tethering on a supported handset and network, or Holafly if its daily sharing allowance covers your needs. For sustained laptop use, weigh sharing conditions and reduced speeds rather than choosing on the unlimited label alone.

Airalo and Holafly support internet calls and messaging through apps rather than providing a local telephone number. If ordinary calls or SMS matter, keep a suitable home line active or choose German prepaid service. There is no single best provider for every Berlin visit: the deciding conditions are your stay length, sharing needs and tolerance for reduced speeds.

Airport SIM sales and prepaid identity checks

At Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), you can buy SIM cards without entering a departures-only area. Travelex sells them in Terminal 1’s public Arrival 1 area on the arrivals level. The Wall Store Berlin also sells SIM cards at the airport railway station, on the level below arrivals. These are separate purchase options depending on where you leave the terminal.

A city mobile-phone shop is another option if you want an assisted purchase. Agree the tariff, SIM format and identity-verification process before paying, especially if you need a German number rather than data alone.

All German prepaid mobile providers must verify the subscriber’s name, address and, for individuals, date of birth. There is no general exemption for visitors. A passport is among the qualifying identity documents, while another suitable procedure must meet Federal Network Agency requirements.

Installing and activating your eSIM

  1. Save the provider’s installation instructions and use a working internet connection to install the profile at the appropriate stage.
  2. For Airalo, read the package’s Activation Policy before installation: most packages start validity on connection to a supported destination network, but some start on installation.
  3. Holafly installation alone does not start validity; connection to a supported network in Berlin does. Install Vodafone Travel before departure, but activate it only on arrival in Germany, when network connection starts validity.
  4. On arrival, select the travel line for mobile data. Enable data roaming on the Holafly or Vodafone Travel profile, and for Vodafone Travel, set the APN to `live.vodafone.com`.
  5. Keep home-line data roaming off if you do not intend to use its roaming data. Keep the home line enabled if you want calls and SMS.

Installation and the start of paid validity are not necessarily the same event. Apply the setting to the named travel line, not indiscriminately to both lines.

If an installed profile does not connect, review its line selection and provider settings, then contact provider support through a working connection. A carrier-locked phone needs its home carrier’s roaming, while an eSIM-incompatible but unlocked phone can use a physical SIM if it accepts one.
