Getting to Bologna: Airports, Rail and Transfers

A flight ending at Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ) avoids an extra rail journey from Milan or Rome. If you arrive by train, Bologna Centrale is the main gateway, and from there, the historic centre is reached on foot. Piazza Maggiore is the common destination for the transfers below, including the pedestrian finish after a taxi.

Choose a flight to BLQ when it suits your origin. Rail brings you straight to Centrale, while a coach can suit a direct connection from your starting city. Q is the lower-cost airport choice for a solo traveller willing to change buses. Its ordinary ticket ends at Ospedale Maggiore, but an integrated Marconi Express ticket or valid urban pass can change the ticket arrangement.

A group with luggage may prefer a taxi to avoid the interchange and longer station walk. Outside a usable public connection, the official taxi queue is the fallback. All three journeys need time beyond movement, including boarding, waiting or queuing.

Arrival airports

Choose the airport and the onward journey together. Milan Malpensa and Rome Fiumicino can suit flights from your origin, but each adds a separate airport train and a change to a Bologna-bound train. Compare that complete journey with a flight ticket ending at BLQ, not just the airfare.

Guglielmo Marconi Airport

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport is the city’s principal passenger airport, identified by BLQ on your flight itinerary. It is the simplest airport choice for reaching Bologna without a Milan or Rome rail connection. A connecting flight whose final airport is BLQ still leaves only the local transfer, while a ticket ending at Malpensa or Fiumicino leaves the onward Italian journey for you to arrange.

At Milan Malpensa (MXP), take the Milano Centrale branch of Trenord’s Malpensa Express, not a train ending at Milano Cadorna. From Terminal 1 arrivals, the station approach is about 500 metres and about 6 minutes. The direct RE51 journey to Centrale takes just under an hour. Milan airport transfer choices explains the terminal approaches and branch choice before you continue to Bologna.

At Milano Centrale, change to a separately ticketed Trenitalia Frecciarossa or Italo high-speed train, both direct to Bologna Centrale. The Frecciarossa leg takes about an hour and a quarter. Add passport control where applicable, baggage collection, train waits and time to find and board your onward departure. From Bologna Centrale, use the shared walk described under train arrivals.

Malpensa has nonstop flights from the following US airports. A seasonal flight can suit your dates but should not be treated as a year-round connection.

At Rome Fiumicino (FCO), US flights arrive at Terminal 3, with direct access towards the railway station. The approach is about 150 metres and about 2 minutes. Terminal 1 connects by a covered pedestrian route towards Terminal 3 and the station signs.

Take Trenitalia’s Leonardo Express to Roma Termini, then change trains for Bologna Centrale. Direct Trenitalia Frecciarossa and Italo services make the second leg without another change, and the Frecciarossa journey takes about 2 hours. Buy the airport train and onward high-speed tickets separately, leaving room for arrival formalities, baggage collection, train waits and boarding at Termini. Once at Bologna Centrale, follow the shared station-to-centre walk below.

From the airport to the centre

After arriving at BLQ, choose the boarding point for your transfer before leaving the terminal. Marconi Express uses its own station, Q is a TPER bus journey, and taxis leave from the terminal forecourt. Both public options bring you to Bologna Centrale for the shared walk to Piazza Maggiore, while a taxi can finish closer to the square, at Piazza Galvani.

Marconi Express

For regular Marconi Express operation, follow the airport signs to its station: the terminal approach is about 600 metres and about 8 minutes. The service runs directly to Bologna Centrale, with an intermediate stop at Lazzaretto.

Use the same contactless card or device at both entry and exit gates. With a QR ticket, scan it at both gate readers and retain it until you have left the station. After reaching Centrale, continue with the station-to-centre walk below.

Q bus and the city connection

From BLQ, TPER’s Q bus reaches Ospedale Maggiore in about 20 minutes over about 5.2 km. For the daytime connection, change there to station-bound line 35: that leg is about 3.9 km and about 18 minutes. Choose the Centrale-bound stop at the interchange before boarding.

Q’s early-morning and after-midnight journeys have a through pattern to Bologna Centrale, whereas the daytime journey normally requires the change. Validate on every boarding, including after a transfer. Insert a paper ticket, scan its QR code or tap your contactless card on the validator. Once at Centrale, the final walk is the same as for rail arrivals.

Taxi from the terminal

Use the official taxi queue in the ground-floor forecourt in front of BLQ’s terminal. The fare to Piazza Galvani is metered, not fixed. The airport departure minimum is €12.80, including 6 km above 20 km/h. Applicable supplements are:

  • Public holidays (06:00–22:00): €2.20.
  • Night (22:00–06:00): €3.15.
  • Suitcases: €0.60 each.

The road leg to the authorised Piazza Galvani taxi stand is about 11 km and about 23 minutes. From that stand, continue on foot to Piazza Maggiore: about 350 metres and about 4 minutes.

Train arrivals at Centrale

Bologna Centrale receives Trenitalia Frecciarossa and Italo high-speed trains, Intercity services, and regional trains operated by Trenitalia and Trenitalia Tper. An advance high-speed fare can save money, but reduced flexibility matters after a flight. If arrival delays could make you miss your train, weigh that saving against a ticket allowing changes.

From Centrale’s main public exit, continue towards Piazza Maggiore along the Via dell’Indipendenza approach. The walk is about 1.6 km and about 23 minutes. Allow more time with luggage or stops. A heavy suitcase may make a station taxi preferable to walking.

If your starting point is Florence, Florence to Bologna trains and coaches compares the services, boarding points and ticket choices for that specific journey.

Intercity coach arrivals

Autostazione di Bologna suits an intercity coach that runs directly from your origin and arrives near the historic centre. The arrival stop printed on your ticket determines your final leg, and other Bologna stops are not interchangeable with this terminal.

From Autostazione di Bologna to Piazza Maggiore, the walk is about 1.5 km and about 21 minutes. Leave room for luggage and a break after a long coach journey. The coach fare and journey duration depend on where you start.

Arriving by road

Bologna’s motorway approaches are the A1 from Milan or Florence, A13 from Padua and Venice, and A14 from the Adriatic coast. The general limited-traffic zone covers most of the historic centre inside the ring of avenues.

Entry permission does not cover pedestrian areas, bus lanes or permanently restricted areas, or grant free parking. Leave the car in permitted parking and finish on foot to Piazza Maggiore.
