Five Days in Krakow: City Walks and Two Day Trips

Krakow rewards a stay that separates its city walks from its two major excursions. Arrive before the first sightseeing morning: the Old Town, Wawel and Kazimierz each get a day, while Auschwitz-Birkenau and Wieliczka remain separate trips. Accommodation rests and named dinner areas keep evenings part of the stay.

Five days is not too long if you want both excursions. Staying inside Planty gives you an easy Old Town walk to the first starting point. Kazimierz suits evenings out, but accommodation near bars can disturb light sleepers, so choose a quieter side street if sleep matters more than nightlife.

The Krakow Connoisseur museum-and-transport pass costs PLN 295 for 72 continuous hours from the date and time selected at purchase, not three calendar days. It excludes St Mary’s Basilica and Rynek Underground, so it is not an all-in ticket for these walks. The mine excursion is priced separately in its card.

The Tuesday start places the Factory on Thursday and the National Museum on Saturday. Move whole days around closures rather than splitting museum visits. Krakow Główny is the rail starting point for both excursions, while Krakow MDA bus station serves the direct memorial-bus alternative.

  12. Ends around 20:45

The Cloth Hall’s Renaissance arcades, Leonardo’s Lady with an Ermine and the streets around Main Market Square make this an art-filled opening day, ending with Planty and dinner around Szczepański Square. Czartoryski closes on Mondays and Rynek Underground on the second Monday of each month; move the whole day to avoid these closures. Between sights the walk totals about 4.4 km; wear comfortable shoes. The museum-heavy day also suits rain.

Main Market Square’s open medieval scale deserves a circuit before Florian Gate, whose Gothic stone tower carries a small Madonna relief on its city-facing side.

The Czartoryski Museum earns its time for Lady with an Ermine, with the wider collection around it. General individual visits do not require a reservation.

St Mary’s Basilica follows the museum because Monday–Saturday tourist access runs 11:30–18:00. Sunday and holiday access is 14:00–18:00. Visits stop during Mass, so on Sundays move the basilica after lunch.

After Kleparz, Rynek Underground reveals the medieval city beneath the square. Optional St Anne’s offers illusionistic frescoes and stucco, while Collegium Maius offers a Gothic arcaded courtyard with tiered galleries. Drop these extras after a late start, rather than rush the museums.

Rest before Planty’s paths and dinner around Szczepański Square, away from the main square’s visitor circuit.

After the Old Town, Wawel’s private rooms, State Rooms and cathedral lead into Kanonicza and Stradom, a day of royal art and church interiors ending beside the Vistula and with dinner in Dębniki.

Choose Wawel’s combined first-and-second-floor route for the private rooms, Porcelain Cabinet, State Rooms and Turkish tents. It also includes temporary exhibitions and Wawel Recovered. Include the Royal Gardens within this visit during their 24 April–30 September season. Individual tickets are sold online up to a month ahead or at the ticket office on the day.

Wawel Cathedral’s separate ticket covers the cathedral, Sigismund’s Bell, Royal Tombs, Cathedral Museum and Archdiocesan Museum. Cover your arms and back and keep your phone silent. Photography is prohibited inside except at the bell and tombs.

Optional Kanonicza adds Renaissance townhouses and ornate stone portals before lunch in Stradom. Corpus Christi Basilica deserves attention for its carved high altar and boat-shaped pulpit. St Catherine’s lofty rib-vaulted nave and Skałka’s blue-and-white Baroque façade and courtyard papal altar are optional extensions.

After your rest, Bulwar Poleski offers a public promenade for sitting or strolling by the Vistula before dinner around Dębniki Market Square. Late-day light is good for looking back towards Wawel across the river.

Return to Kazimierz after yesterday’s churches: the Old Synagogue, Szeroka and Schindler’s Factory connect Jewish religious life with occupation history, followed by Krakus Mound’s panorama and dinner around Podgórze Market Square. The Factory closes on the first Tuesday of each month, so retain Thursday in the suggested order, or move this day intact. This is the most sustained city walk, about 6.2 km between sights.

The Old Synagogue’s Torah ornaments and ritual objects explain festivals, customs and everyday religious life. Szeroka carries that story outside through surviving synagogues and communal buildings. Optional Remuh adds Renaissance tombstones and the grave of Rabbi Moses Isserles in the adjoining historic cemetery.

Plac Nowy’s round market building is the quick-lunch stop for zapiekanka, an open-faced baguette usually baked with mushrooms and cheese, with other toppings available. For dinner choices beyond this snack, what to eat in Krakow helps you recognise local dishes.

Bernatek Footbridge takes you into Podgórze. Ghetto Heroes Square’s empty-chair memorial gives the former ghetto a place for reflection before the museum.

Schindler’s Factory explores Krakow under Nazi occupation. Its exhibition follows inhabitants’ experiences from 1939–1945, including the story of Schindler and his factory.

Optional St Joseph’s adds a neo-Gothic brick façade and slender tower. Rest before Krakus Mound, where late-day light suits the city panorama. In winter, drop the evening mound visit or move it to an earlier daylight walk. In rain or heat, shorten or drop the exposed climb and head to dinner instead.

After Podgórze’s occupation history, Auschwitz I’s preserved camp buildings and Birkenau’s grounds form a demanding memorial day, followed by an extended rest and a quiet Wesoła evening with dinner around Kopernika Street. The English guided pass covers both former camps. Auschwitz I’s former barracks contain exhibitions explaining prisoners’ lives and the camp’s operation. Fencing, watchtowers and the gas chamber and crematorium deepen that context.

Wear comfortable outdoor shoes and weather protection, and keep conduct respectful throughout. The Museum provides a free, wheelchair-accessible shuttle between camps, an alternative to the walk. Follow your guided group’s transfer arrangements.

The rail approach starts at Krakow Główny. Alternatively, Lajkonik buses run directly from Krakow MDA, Bosacka 18, to the car park beside Auschwitz I’s visitor entrance. Morning departures are 06:15, 07:10, 08:25 and 09:20, seven days a week with holiday exceptions. Road conditions affect arrival.

After lunch around Oświęcim Market Square, the optional Castle Museum tells the town’s history through its residents. Drop the castle first for a longer memorial visit or a quieter return. The evening stays gentle, away from Kazimierz’s nightlife.

  13. Ends around 20:30

After yesterday’s memorial, St Kinga’s Chapel and the National Museum’s permanent collections offer a contrasting final day, ending on Błonia’s public meadow paths and with dinner in Salwator. The National Museum main building closes on Mondays, so move its afternoon visit if this day falls then. Take SKA1 from Krakow Główny to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia, then walk to the mine.

Choose an English Tourist Route ticket for a specific date and time for St Kinga’s carved underground chapel. Enter through the Daniłowicz Shaft at Daniłowicza 10. The standard descent begins with 380 steps, and you return to the surface through the Regis Shaft in the town centre.

For 2026 English-language tickets, high season runs 1 May–30 September, while low season covers the remaining months. For reduced-mobility access, reserve the adapted section by emailing rezerwacja@kopalnia.pl, confirming a caregiver for anyone unable to move independently.

Optional St Clement’s wooden bell tower precedes lunch around Upper Market Square and the rail return. At the National Museum, permanent displays give Polish art and design their own afternoon. Jordan Park is an optional leafy walk before your rest. For an early departure, cut the museum and park before the morning excursion.

Late arrivals and shorter stays

  • Late first morning: drop Florian Gate, St Anne’s and Collegium Maius first. Move the Old Town museum block to another full day rather than squeeze it into the remaining hours.
  • Four full days: keep the three city clusters and choose either Auschwitz-Birkenau for memorial history or Wieliczka for the underground chambers. Never combine both excursions in one day. Keep any selected memorial day intact.
  • Early final departure: remove the Salwator dinner and Błonia walk first, then the National Museum and Jordan Park. If the morning mine visit cannot fit, remove that excursion day.

Five calendar days with flights at either end are not five sightseeing days. If both excursions leave your stay, three days in Krakow provides the city-only alternative built around these same neighbourhoods.
