Lisbon eSIM: Choosing and Setting Up Mobile Data

You do not need an eSIM for Lisbon if your home tariff already includes suitable roaming in Portugal. If it does not, choose a data eSIM for internet access on a compatible unlocked phone, or a Portuguese prepaid SIM if you need ordinary calls, SMS and a local number. Vodafone Portugal’s tourist eSIM and Ready prepaid plans illustrate the differences. The right choice depends on your handset and how you communicate.

Included roaming is usually the simplest choice for a short stay. Roam-like-at-home protection covers subscriptions from the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Ukraine and Moldova used in Portugal, subject to fair use. UK and other non-covered subscriptions have no automatic entitlement, so any inclusion depends on the home tariff.

A data eSIM suits maps, browsing and app-based messages or calls. Those apps use internet data, not ordinary voice minutes or SMS. Choose a local prepaid line instead when you need to call conventional phone numbers or receive messages on a Portuguese number.

Phone compatibility and your home number

A US phone can work in Portugal if it supports the network and your chosen connection. To use another provider’s SIM or eSIM, it must be carrier-unlocked. An eSIM purchase also requires eSIM support on your particular model. Without it, use a physical SIM in a usable slot.

On a handset supporting the relevant dual-SIM combination, keep both lines enabled and select the travel line for data. Your home number can remain available for calls and verification texts, but home-carrier charges may still apply. Wi-Fi Calling and receiving calls on the other line during a call depend on handset and carrier support.

With only one usable SIM slot and no supported second line, replacing the home SIM removes simultaneous access to your home number. Keep the removed SIM safely for your return.

For online data, buy Vodafone’s Portugal-only tourist eSIM, but for a local calling line, choose a prepaid SIM. The eSIM credentials arrive by email within minutes. Keep that email accessible for installation rather than expecting a physical card.

Vodafone at Lisbon Airport sells voice and data SIM cards, making it an in-person alternative if you want help choosing a line. Vodafone Travellers is also available at Vodafone stores in the city, and advance reservation with airport pickup is another option.

Ready’s charging cycle and its minutes/SMS renewal follow different calendars. For a longer stay, keep enough prepaid balance for the tariff charge rather than assuming an unused allowance keeps the line active.

At Lisbon Airport, join “_VINCI Airports WiFi” and accept the terms in your browser to get online. This gives you a connection for receiving the installation email and setting up the travel line before leaving the airport.

Installing and activating your eSIM

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi and keep the installation email available. If using its QR code, display it on another screen or keep a printed copy to scan.
  2. Install using the email’s iOS or Android link, scan the QR code, or enter the supplied manual codes. Follow the handset’s prompts to add the eSIM.
  3. Give the lines recognisable labels, such as “Home” and “Portugal”, so you apply settings to the intended line.
  4. Select the travel eSIM for mobile data. On iPhone, use Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data → Cellular/Mobile Data, then turn off Allow Mobile Data Switching. On Android, use Network & internet or Connections → SIMs/SIM manager → Mobile data. Menu labels vary by handset and software version.
  5. Turn data roaming off on the home line. Enable it for the Vodafone travel eSIM, keeping the two lines’ settings distinct.

Selecting the travel line for data does not move your home number to it. Keep the home line enabled only if you want its calls or texts under your home tariff. Before leaving Wi-Fi, try opening a webpage over mobile data so a setup problem can be dealt with while you still have internet access.

If your mobile data does not work

Use Wi-Fi while you work through a mobile-data fault. You can open My Vodafone and keep the installation email accessible without relying on the line you are trying to restore.

Do

  • Confirm the travel eSIM is selected for data, with mobile data and its data roaming enabled; restart the phone to register on the network again.
  • Review handset data limits, whether the plan is active and includes data, remaining allowance in My Vodafone, and any service block or usage restriction.
  • Keep the installed profile while diagnosing the fault.
  • Buy a new Portugal-only eSIM if the allowance is exhausted or the plan has expired. This restores service rather than correcting settings on an active plan.
  • For a failed tourist-eSIM installation, call +351 911 691 200, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The eSIM-support line is free of charge; your home line’s roaming charges may still apply if you use it to call.

Don’t

  • Switch to home-line data as an automatic workaround that could incur roaming charges.
  • Delete the eSIM profile merely because the first connection attempt fails.
  • Keep resetting the handset when the allowance or validity has ended.
