Nearest Airport to Trento: Bolzano or Verona?

Bolzano Airport is nearer to Trento than Verona Airport, but Verona can be the better choice if its flight suits your departure airport and travel dates. Both handle scheduled passengers; Trento–Mattarello is an airfield rather than an alternative for a scheduled airline arrival.

For the onward journey, compare the airport terminal to Piazza Duomo in central Trento, not just the flight price. Bolzano offers a shorter taxi-and-train connection, while Verona has an airport bus to Verona Porta Nuova, followed by a train to Trento.

Choose Bolzano when a suitable flight makes the shorter onward journey useful, or choose Verona when its flight suits you better. With little time, a well-timed flight and connection matter more than road proximity alone.

For a limited budget, compare airfare, baggage and onward tickets together. With children or bulky luggage, a direct taxi avoids unloading and boarding again at the connecting station. Taxi estimates vary with vehicle size, time of travel and surcharges, but a larger party can share the vehicle cost.

All these options reach Trento station, then continue on foot to Piazza Duomo, the cathedral square: about 550 metres and about 7 minutes. Keep that final walk in mind with heavy bags. For a late arrival, allow time to leave the terminal and reach the connecting station, because the last airport bus is not a guarantee of an onward train.

Trento–Mattarello and airport codes

Trento–Mattarello does not serve scheduled commercial passenger airlines. The airfield handles tourist aviation, flight-school aircraft, civil-defence operations, advanced ultralights and air taxis. An air-taxi operation is not the same as a scheduled airline service you can choose for a routine flight to Trento.

Its official name is Aeroporto Caproni Trento (Caproni Trento Airport), also known as Trento’s Gianni Caproni airport. Mattarello and Caproni therefore refer to the same airfield, not two competing passenger gateways.

Trento–Mattarello’s ICAO identifier is LIDT, an aviation identifier rather than a passenger-booking IATA code. For airline searches, use BZO for Bolzano Airport or VRN for Verona Villafranca Airport. Keeping the names and code types separate helps you avoid treating a result for the Trento airfield as a scheduled flight arrival.

Flights to Bolzano and Verona

Bolzano Airport has scheduled passenger flights operated by SkyAlps, with recurring summer and winter programmes. The origins served vary with the season, so a flight that suits a summer trip may not offer the same option for a winter visit.

Verona Villafranca Airport also handles scheduled passenger flights. A suitable flight to Verona can outweigh Bolzano’s shorter onward journey, especially if it avoids a flight connection or gets you to Italy at a more useful time of day.

Compare flights from your own departure airport for your travel dates, including baggage charges and the onward journey. A cheaper airfare is less useful if a late landing means replacing the train connection with a long taxi ride or an overnight stay.

From Bolzano Airport

From Bolzano Airport, take a taxi to Bolzano station. Allow roughly €20–€35 per vehicle, with the price affected by time of travel and surcharges. At the station, unload your bags and board a direct train to Trento.

Trenitalia Regional and Italo high-speed services offer direct journeys without a train change. Journey times vary by service, so leave room for the train you choose when planning your arrival in Trento.

Italo advertises fares from €8.90 one way per person, separate from the airport taxi. The regional tariff is €0.20 per kilometre, rounded up to the next €0.50.

From Verona Airport

From Verona Airport, take ATV’s Verona Airlink, line 199, directly to Verona Porta Nuova. Leave Arrivals and turn right: the bus stop is in the forecourt just outside the terminal.

The one-way Airlink ticket costs €7. Buses run daily, every 20 minutes during peak hours and every 40 minutes at other times. Build in time to unload your luggage at Porta Nuova, enter the station and reach your train’s platform.

Choose a direct train from Verona Porta Nuova to Trento to avoid another change. Trenitalia Regional services include direct trains, and Italo also serves the route and advertises fares from €8.90 one way per person, separate from the bus ticket. Continue from Trento station to Piazza Duomo on foot.

For the direct taxi, allow roughly €180–€260 per vehicle; vehicle size, late-night travel and surcharges can move the price. This costs more than bus-and-train travel for a solo traveller, but keeps a family’s bags together and removes the station transfer.
