Porto Itinerary: Two Core Days and a Slower Third

São Bento’s painted tile panels, the lanes above Ribeira and the cellars across the Douro give Porto’s first two days a clear shape. A third day takes you to Portuguese art, independent galleries and hillside gardens, with time to return to your accommodation before dinner.

How many days do you need?

Count complete days, not arrival and departure dates. The first two cover the historic centre and Gaia, while the extra day gives Soares dos Reis, Miguel Bombarda and the gardens room of their own. Public holidays can interrupt these weekday combinations.

Ribeira lies below Baixa on a steep slope: returning to your room means climbing back towards the cathedral. Wear shoes with grip for cobbles, especially in rain. In summer, take shaded breaks. In winter, move outdoor viewpoints earlier for daylight.

Lunch is usually served around 12:00–15:00, with 12:30–14:30 a comfortable window. Dinner commonly runs from about 19:30–22:30. The routes leave an accommodation rest before the evening outing.

Budget on single tickets rather than Porto.CARD. Porto’s tourism authority offers the card online and at sales points, but Soares dos Reis records its withdrawal in July 2026. These conflicting official positions make the advertised benefits an uncertain basis for this stay.

At Bolsa, arrange the next suitable departure on arrival. Buying admission ahead does not guarantee a particular tour. Language allocation follows arrival order. Let the surrounding stroll yield to the tour.

Taylor’s admits audio-tour visitors subject to availability, but large groups should reserve. Soares dos Reis offers online tickets without mandatory advance booking for general admission. Optional church interiors cost extra.

São Bento’s tiles, the cathedral cloister and Bolsa’s Arab Room lead down Rua das Flores into a history-rich day, ending beside Ribeira. Pair this old town with tomorrow’s bridge-and-cellar crossing. On Mondays, replace Casa do Infante with more time in Ribeira.

São Bento’s entrance hall depicts the Battle of Valdevez and Conquest of Ceuta alongside daily life and transport history. Scan the hall before examining individual panels.

Porto Cathedral’s optional cloister combines Gothic arcades with blue-and-white tiles showing the Song of Solomon and the Virgin Mary’s life. Rua das Flores then offers a gentler downhill browse.

Bolhão has fish, seafood, meat, produce and Portuguese specialities. The food market opens at 08:00 Monday–Saturday, closing at 20:00 Monday–Friday and 18:00 Saturday, earlier than its restaurants.

Aliados frames City Hall and the former Banco de Portugal headquarters. At Cedofeita, a francesinha is a substantial sandwich usually layered with steak, ham and sausage, covered in melted cheese and beer-based sauce, often served with chips.

Two days, a late start or an early departure

  • Two full days: keep the old-town and Gaia routes, and drop the art-and-gardens day.
  • Late first morning: omit the cathedral and shorten Rua das Flores to reach a suitable Bolsa tour.
  • Early second-day departure: cut the chapel and Jardim do Morro, shorten Aliados and prioritise Taylor’s within its opening window. Drop Serra do Pilar and dinner if your departure demands it.

Prefer sea air to galleries? Choose three days with the coast as an alternative third day, rather than adding an excursion to these walks.
