Rome to Turin: Trains, Coaches and Flights

Rome Termini and Piazza Castello make useful endpoints for comparing the journey to Turin: the train brings you to Porta Susa, the coach needs local connections, and flying involves an airport train at each end. A short flight is only one part of the journey, especially when you have luggage or arrive late.

Train, coach or flight?

Rome Termini to Piazza Castello. Times add travel components only, excluding departure waits, boarding and airport procedures; starting fares are advertised minima, not guaranteed totals.

Choose rail for fewer boarding steps and a central arrival. Consider the coach when its actual fare, including both local tickets, suits your budget. Flying suits you when the complete airfare and airport connections work together. Advance purchase and lighter bags help keep the fare down. Extra connections mean moving luggage between vehicles. With the latest flight, include an overnight stop near Turin Airport before continuing by rail.

High-speed trains and arrival stations

Italo and Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa provide direct high-speed trains from Rome Termini to Turin Porta Susa. The rail journey takes about 4 and a half hours over about 712 km: Turin is not a nearby excursion from Rome. Direct departures vary with the timetable and travel date. The first Frecciarossa leaves at 05:40 daily, including weekends. The last direct high-speed departure is 20:10 daily in the timetable valid from 14 June to 12 December 2026.

Italo advertises one-way adult fares from €32.90, rather than offering that price on every train. Frecciarossa’s Base fare is demand-priced. Compare the ticket’s flexibility as well as its price: buying ahead can reduce the cost, but a cheaper ticket may be costly to change if your plans move.

Both operators sell tickets for a particular train with an assigned seat. Choosing a specific seat can be optional or subject to the fare conditions. Match the train number, carriage and seat to your ticket, then use the station departure display to find your platform. Rome Termini and Rome Tiburtina are different stations, as are Turin Porta Susa and Turin Porta Nuova, so follow the station names printed on your booking.

High-speed e-tickets need no pre-boarding validation. Keep your Italo ticket ready for any station checkpoint and the onboard inspection. With Trenitalia Ticketless, give the onboard staff your booking code, or PNR. Self Check-in is optional. Your ticket remains tied to the booked date and train.

From Porta Susa, the walk to Piazza Castello takes about 25 minutes over about 1.8 km. It brings you into the centre without another ticket or vehicle change. With heavy luggage, allow extra walking time rather than treating the station arrival as arrival at the square.

Coaches from Tiburtina

FlixBus, Itabus and BlaBlaCar Bus offer direct coaches from Rome’s Autostazione Tibus at Tiburtina to Turin’s Vittorio Emanuele terminal, but available departures vary by date. Itabus advertises one-way adult fares from €7.99. Add both local tickets to the coach fare before comparing it with rail. The advertised minimum is not guaranteed for your departure.

Starting at Rome Termini, take metro B towards Rebibbia to Tiburtina, then head for the Tibus coach terminal at Largo Guido Mazzoni, not the railway platforms. The access journey takes about 12 minutes. FlixBus recommends reaching its stop at least 15 minutes before departure, so leave room for finding the correct boarding point and handling bags.

The Rome BIT costs €1.50 per adult and covers one metro journey within its 100-minute validity. In Turin, the separate City 100 costs €1.90 digitally or €2.00 on chip-on-paper per adult, also with 100-minute validity.

Use the arrival terminal named on your coach ticket. From the Corso Vittorio Emanuele II terminal, walk to Palagiustizia and take bus 55 towards Vanchiglia, Corso Farini. Alight at Castello for Piazza Castello. This final connection takes about 19 minutes, so the coach’s arrival is not the end of your journey to the square.

Flights and airport transfers

Rome Fiumicino has nonstop flights to Turin Airport with ITA Airways and Wizz Air. ITA’s scheduled flight lasts 1 hour 15 minutes. The earliest departure is Wizz Air’s 06:40 on Mondays and Fridays, from 18 September to 23 October 2026. ITA’s late service leaves at 21:45 Monday to Saturday, with a 21:50 departure also listed on Wednesdays.

Compare fares with the bags you will actually carry. ITA Light includes a cabin bag up to 8 kg and 55 × 40 × 23 cm, plus a personal accessory up to 30 × 40 × 15 cm. Wizz Air’s basic fare includes an under-seat bag up to 10 kg and 40 × 30 × 20 cm, but a 55 × 40 × 23 cm trolley bag requires paid WIZZ Priority. Buying ahead and travelling light favour the lower end of the estimated airfare range.

From Rome Termini, Trenitalia’s nonstop Leonardo Express reaches Fiumicino in about 34 minutes, costing €14 one way per adult. Departures run every 15 minutes, with the first at 04:50 and the last at 23:05 daily. For the early flight, take the first train and allow separately for the walk to departures, security and boarding.

Validate a paper Leonardo Express ticket before travel. Digital tickets validate automatically, but select your train or complete check-in before departure where your ticket format requires it. With TAP&TAP contactless payment, tap your card or device at the departure reader before boarding. No arrival tap is needed on this service.

At Turin Airport, Torino Aeroporto di Caselle station gives you direct Trenitalia suburban trains to Porta Susa on SFM4, SFM6 and SFM7. The journey takes about 30 minutes and costs €3.70 one way per passenger. Connections run every 30 minutes on weekdays. The first departure on Sundays and public holidays is 05:20.

For Turin TAP&TAP, tap the same card or device before boarding and again on arrival, unlike Leonardo Express. From Porta Susa, continue on the walk to Piazza Castello described above, allowing extra time with luggage.
