Linate Airport to Milan City Centre: Transfer Options

Linate Airport has a direct metro connection to San Babila, within walking reach of Piazza del Duomo. Choose M4 for the Duomo area, a coach for a no-change journey to Milano Centrale, or a taxi for fewer luggage-handling steps. The coach goes to the main railway station rather than the central square, so a Duomo-bound journey continues by metro.

  • M4: arrivals access about 300 metres, about 4 minutes; train about 6.9 km, about 13 minutes; San Babila walk about 700 metres, about 9 minutes.
  • Coach: 25 minutes to Centrale; M3 access about 300 metres, about 4 minutes; train about 3 km, about 7 minutes; square access about 50 metres, about 1 minute.
  • Taxi: road route towards the Duomo area about 7.3 km.

M4 is the lowest-cost choice for a solo traveller heading to the square. Add a train wait of up to the service interval, plus ticket purchase and boarding. Coaches add airport access, boarding and two waits. Taxis add rank access, queues and any walk from a permitted set-down point, and congestion increases road time.

M4 to San Babila and the Duomo

For the M4 option, start at Linate arrivals and follow the metro signs through the terminal-connected entrance, without going outside. Linate Aeroporto is a metro station, not a national or regional railway station: for an onward mainline train, you need to travel into Milan.

ATM’s M4 runs directly to San Babila. Board towards San Cristoforo and get off at San Babila for the Duomo area. Both Linate Aeroporto and San Babila have lift routes between terminal or street level and the platforms, making this option manageable with luggage or a pushchair.

You can buy a ticket at station machines or through the ATM app. App payments accept credit cards, PayPal and Satispay. Alternatively, use a contactless Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Maestro or VPay card or device at the gates, without registration or an extra payment fee.

Validate at both entry and exit gates. If continuing to Centrale by M4 and M3, the ordinary ticket covers both lines within its validity: validate when leaving M4 and again when entering M3. With contactless, use the same card or device throughout, including the exit and re-entry. Keep your ticket or payment device available for inspection. A phone wallet and its underlying physical card are not interchangeable for these taps.

At San Babila, leave the station and continue along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II to Piazza del Duomo. This keeps the final leg on foot rather than adding another metro journey, and brings you to Milan’s cathedral.

Coaches to Centrale and the onward metro

If you want Milano Centrale rather than the San Babila arrival described above, a coach avoids a metro change. Air Pullman’s Linate Shuttle runs directly, while Autostradale’s Airport Bus Express runs via Lambrate. Both board outside Linate arrivals at bus stop 1 and arrive at Piazza Luigi di Savoia, on Centrale’s eastern side.

Autostradale operates daily from Linate between 08:30 and 22:30. Its online promotion does not apply to tickets bought at the stop. Tickets remain valid until used, regardless of the selected date and time, so you can take the next departure with boarding space. One hold bag and one small cabin bag are included, but additional luggage depends on space.

From the Centrale coach stop, follow signs to M3 and board towards San Donato for Duomo. Leave Duomo station for the square. Between 07:00 and 19:00, train intervals are 3–5 minutes Monday–Friday, 5 minutes Saturday and 5–8 minutes Sunday and public holidays. Add this wait to the travel components above.

For Centrale by metro, start again at Linate Aeroporto: take M4 towards San Cristoforo to Sforza-Policlinico, then walk via Via Pantano to Missori. This is a street-level connection, not an underground interchange. The accessible route includes an outdoor section of about 350 metres. At Missori, take M3 towards Comasina to Centrale FS, then continue to the main station entrance.

  • Linate–Sforza-Policlinico M4: about 7.8 km, about 17 minutes.
  • Full station-to-station connection to Missori: about 700 metres, about 9 minutes.
  • Missori–Centrale M3: about 3.2 km, about 10 minutes.
  • Centrale station approach: about 200 metres, about 2 minutes.

Including the airport access walk described above, this journey totals about 12 km and about 42 minutes of travel. Allow separately for both train waits and gate passage. Use the same ticket or contactless device as described for M4.

Taxis to the centre

A taxi takes you from Linate’s rank towards your central Milan destination without a change of transport, though you may need to walk from a permitted set-down point. Linate to central Milan is metered, not a fixed airport–city fare. The usual cost range in the comparison is per vehicle: sharing it across a travelling party can make the extra expense easier to justify, especially with bulky luggage.

Traffic and the time of travel affect the meter. There is no separate airport-origin supplement: the meter includes supplements and additional costs, apart from motorway tolls. Conventional taxi journeys departing Linate have a €16 minimum fare, replacing any lower meter reading. That minimum is not a flat price to the Duomo area, so pay the higher metered amount when the journey exceeds it.

First and last metro departures

The first M4 leaves Linate at 06:00 every day. Train intervals follow these recurring patterns:

  • Monday–Friday: 3 minutes until 21:00, then 6 minutes until the last train.
  • Saturday: 3 minutes until about 19:00, then 6 minutes.
  • Sunday and public holidays: 4 minutes until 12:00, 3 minutes until 19:00, then 6 minutes.

For a late arrival, allow for baggage collection and reaching the platform, not just the aircraft’s landing time.

Yes, Milan is generally safe for ordinary evening visits, with caution around crowded transport and on isolated streets once activity subsides.
