Turin by Tram: Useful Lines and How to Ride

Turin’s trams serve two useful visitor journeys: line 4 to the Porta Palazzo market and line 15 towards Sassi, where the separate rack railway climbs to Superga. Historic line 7 offers a different reason to board: a circular ride on restored period vehicles through the centre. Read both the line number and destination before boarding, then validate your ticket or complete your contactless payment.

Walking is the default in Turin’s compact, largely flat centre. Porta Nuova station to Piazza Castello is about 1.3 km, taking about 18 minutes. Tram 4 serves Porta Palazzo’s market, and tram 15 takes you east towards Sassi.

Line 15 runs daily. The departure times above are from termini, not intermediate stops: a tram reaches your boarding stop later. Line 4’s evening departures are individually scheduled, and line 15 also has scheduled weekday departures outside its daytime window. For a late return after your tram has finished, taking a taxi in Turin gives you another way back.

From Porta Nuova, take tram 4 towards Falchera for the Porta Palazzo market. Use the boarding-stop name above to distinguish it from other station-area stops. Porta Palazzo Nord brings you to the market area around Piazza della Repubblica, rather than requiring a return through the central shopping streets.

Bus 11 also connects the Porta Nuova and Porta Palazzo stops, taking about 11 minutes.

For the eastern journey, start at Vittorio Veneto near Piazza Vittorio Veneto and take tram 15 towards Sassi/Piazza Coriolano. The ride to the Coriolano terminus area takes about 18 minutes. Look for the Sassi-Superga alighting label. Coriolano is the terminus name used for this end of the line.

From Coriolano, the final walk to Sassi station is about 250 metres, taking about 4 minutes. Tram 15 does not climb to Superga: the Sassi–Superga rack railway is a separate onward service, beginning at Sassi station. Leave the urban tram here if that railway is your destination.

At either boarding stop, match the line number with the destination display, not the number alone. Once aboard, follow the forthcoming stop names so you can prepare to alight at your destination.

You can change between urban buses and trams within your ticket’s validity, so an onward surface connection does not require another ticket while it remains valid. The urban ticket also includes one metro journey. Use Turin metro lines and stations to choose where to continue underground.

A physical City ticket uses a chip-on-paper medium. Keep it intact for the validator. The next section explains the boarding action for each payment method.

Boarding, validation and contactless payment

Validate promptly when you board, whether you use a physical ticket or TO Move, while contactless bank-card payment uses Tap & Go on equipped trams.

Do

  • Pass your physical ticket near the validator, revalidate on each change and keep it for inspection.
  • Buy TO Move before boarding; show the validated in-app ticket, or its iOS QR code, during inspection.
  • For Tap & Go inspection, make the last four digits of the payment card number verifiable, including a virtual card’s number.

Don’t

  • Treat an app purchase receipt as a valid travel ticket.
  • Present a wallet containing several cards to the contactless reader.
  • Board a tram without Tap & Go expecting bank-card payment; obtain a physical or app ticket beforehand.

For TO Move, open the app, select your ticket and tap your smartphone on the dedicated validator. On iOS, scan the ticket’s QR code at the reader beneath the validator. Wait for confirmation, and revalidate whenever you change vehicles. Keep your phone charged and the ticket accessible.

Tap & Go trams have a yellow front-door sticker or yellow-and-blue livery. Board through the front door and present only your intended bank card, phone or watch to the validator immediately. Hold it there until the confirmation beep.

The fleet is not uniformly step-free. For wheelchair boarding, use a vehicle with a folding ramp at the wheelchair area, and the driver can assist with the ramp or kneeling function. Fully low-floor Series 8000 trams operate on line 4. With a pushchair, look for a low-floor vehicle to avoid lifting it up steps.

Historic tram 7

Operating daysDeparture windowInterval
Sundays and public holidays09:30–19:30Every 60 minutes

Historic tram 7 is a heritage ride on restored period vehicles, rather than a routine transfer. Its trams date from the 1930s–1950s and have been technically updated, preserving the older vehicles for passenger service. The central circular route links Piazza Castello and Porta Nuova, letting you enjoy the tram itself as well as the journey.

At Piazza Castello, board at CASTELLO CAP, stop 409, on the Prefecture side of the square. Ordinary urban tickets and passes are accepted: you do not need a separate heritage-service ticket. Use the same validation habits as on the other urban trams.
